Building Hope: Shelter for Girls' Education in Afghanistan
Mission: Providing Shelter and Essential Resources for Elementary Girls School in a poor-remote region of Afghanistan
Background:
Omid Eskan village, located in the Miramoor district of Daikondi province in central Afghanistan, is home to an elementary girls' school that has been striving to provide basic education under extremely challenging conditions for 16 years. The school, which serves 250 students from grades 1 to 6 (including a small number of boys in the first grade), has no building. As a result, classes are held in open spaces, under trees, in local homes, or sometimes in a mosque. This lack of infrastructure exposes students and teachers to harsh weather conditions—rain, scorching sun, and freezing cold—creating significant disruptions to the learning process and endangering student retention. The school also suffers from a severe lack of basic resources. It has no chairs, desks, or teaching supplies, and there is no dedicated office space for teachers or administrators. These deficiencies severely limit the school’s ability to provide a conducive and effective learning environment.
The absence of a school building is a direct result of systemic discrimination, widespread poverty, and the lack of attention from both the government and the international community over the past years. These factors have compounded the challenges faced by the local community, leaving the school without the support or resources necessary to provide even the most basic infrastructure.

The local community, predominantly reliant on subsistence agriculture, is impoverished and unable to address these challenges on their own. Years of neglect and a lack of support from the central government have left the school without the resources or infrastructure necessary to meet the educational needs of its students. Without intervention, the school will remain unable to provide a stable or effective learning environment, further perpetuating the cycle of poverty and disadvantage in the region.
This project seeks to address these challenges by providing immediate relief and implementing long-term solutions to ensure the school can fulfill its mission of delivering quality education to its students. By focusing on creating stable infrastructure, supplying essential resources, and improving overall learning conditions, this initiative will offer the children of Omid Eskan village a chance to build brighter futures.
Project Objectives (Phase 1): Immediate Relief and Infrastructure Setup
1. Provide Immediate Shelter: Equip the school with seven high-quality tents for classrooms
and an office, providing a stable and weather-protected environment for learning. Set up
basic storage units to protect teaching materials from weather damage.
2. Support Drinking Water: Support construction of a water well on the school grounds to
ensure students and teachers have access to clean drinking water.
Cost Estimate: $6,000
Tents: $3,500 (7 tents at approximately $500 each, including setup costs).
Support Water Well Construction: $2,500 (drilling, materials, and installation).
We will start purchasing the tents as soon as we collect enough funds and we hope to get them by May 2026.
The project will be supervised by a team of Trustees composed of Dr. Melissa Choivend, anthropologist with years of experience in education and Hazara community, Mr. Hasan Faiz, former officer-in-charge Afghanistan Human Rights Commission office of Daikondi, and Raihana Omid, current Headmaster of the school.
